Assembly Labour group supports Sir Ian Blair

At today’s Assembly Plenary meeting, MET Commissioner Sir Ian Blair apologised for the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes but defended his position and said he would not resign because of the incident.

A motion of no confidence, supported by the Tories and Lib Dems on the Assembly, was passed with all 7 Labour members voting against in support of the Commissioner.

The Assembly holds no powers to remove the Commissioner, the formal power to do so is held by the MPA and the Home Office.
